Salon Skanda a Green Circle Salons Member
Salon Skanda joined Green Circle Salons shortly after the company was founded.
It seemed like a no-brainer to partner up with them, considering we seek out eco-friendly and sustainable professional product lines.
Green Circle Salons provides the world’s first, and North America’s only, sustainable salon solution to recover and repurpose beauty waste ensuring that we can help keep people and the planet beautiful.
They are able to transform waste from Salon Skanda into a desirable commodity. Green Circle Salons turnkey program allows salons to repurpose and recover up to 95% of the resources that were once considered waste; materials such as hair, leftover hair color, foils, color tubes, aerosol cans, paper, and plastics.
Today more than ever, consumers vote with their dollars and channel spending into responsible brands that support healthy communities. This program adds layers of value that enhance both customer and staff experience and makes Salon Skanda responsible stewards of our planet.
Most recently I have learned that it is predicted by 2050 there will be more plastics in the ocean then there are fish! This is very disheartening considering so many of these plastics are from beauty products, quite a contradiction to what their intended use is for — to create beauty… instead these products are devastating and destroying our Mother Earth.
I learned last year from one of my mentors that OUR planet is now entering into the 6th stage of mass extinction. I am rather ignorant here but not so ignorant to realize this is very real. If you are interested I encourage you to do a google search to learn exactly what this 6th stage of mass extinction means. Yes, it is scary.
As a result back in 2015/16 Salon Skanda partnered up with Green Circles Salon to do our part in reducing our carbon footprint on the Earth Mother. Green Circles Salons, a for-profit company (doing amazing things), recycles all hair clippings, foils, plastics, color tubes/color waste, latex gloves, paper, and even mannequins used in classes for technical development.
“On World Environment Day, the message is simple: reject single-use plastic. Refuse what you can’t re-use. Together, we can chart a path to a cleaner, greener world.” — Secretary-General, António Guterres
We at Salon Skanda ask everyone reading this to please join the movement of recycling to save our planet, not even so much for ourselves but for our children and for all the other creatures that walk the planet. This, we believe, is “Living Your Best Self.”
This Environmental World Day is making an international call to banning plastics. If you would like to learn more simply click this link Environmental World Day
In 2017 Salon Skanda diverted 955,011 pounds of waste from our landfills and water thanks to Green Circles Salons.
Embracing my Mortal Enemy
I was like many young girls, caught-up in self loathing. Feeling less-than with my natural, unruly curls. I would spend hours blow drying, straightening, and then straightening again, only to leave the house and have my perfectly straight hair frizz and puff as soon as I stepped out in the Georgia humidity.
Left with a semi-straightened mess that wasn’t anywhere close to the long, straight, blonde hair every girl wanted. I tried wearing my curls for a while in high school, when gel was all the rage. I would straighten my bangs and scrunch the life out of my waves. The gel would form a shell, hard enough to withstand the Georgia humidity—and break a hairbrush. I came to the conclusion that, “my hair is just too frizzy,” and began exclusively straightening it. That is, until last year, when our Salon got a supposedly awesome new curly product in, called DevaCurl.
I was a skeptic to say the least. But, in the spirit of trying anything to tame my natural hair, I volunteered to be a model for our first DevaCurl class—and I’ve never looked back! For the first time in my life, my curl both looked and felt amazing!
Over the past year, I have fully embraced my natural, curly texture and I encourage everyone who walks through the salon door to give their natural curls a try! With the DevaCurl products, my morning routine has been simplified—no more straightening, curling, and straightening again. I can wash and go, knowing I’ll leave the house looking cute and feeling confident.
For anyone who is tired of fighting their natural texture I highly recommend treating yourself to a No-poo DevaCurl transformation @salonskanda, or your nearest DevaCurl Certified Salon. It might just change your life, it’s definitely changed mine!
